Car Erupts Into Fireball At Seattle Gas Station, DUI Suspected

An unknown 60-year-old man violently crashed his 2007 Nissan X-Terra into a gas station in Seattle. The crash occurred at approximately 8 pm on Monday, March 13th. Passenger in tow, the man was driving for Uber at the time and a 40-year-old woman in the vehicle was a paying rider.

Surveillance video at a North Seattle Shell gas station caught the moment of the crash. The X-Terra can be seen flying at top speed into the area, taking down a pump with it before erupting into flames. The car only narrowly missed a driver who was pumping gas. Miraculously, the woman riding only suffered minor injuries. The extent of the driver was uninjured during the crash. A sample of his blood was collected by law enforcement after obtaining a warrant.

Until the cause of the crash is definitively determined, there is only speculation as to what caused it. Driving under the influence is one such speculation. Witnesses claim the SUV attempted to brake, and others say a blown tire is what caused the vehicle to completely lose control.

Prior to hitting the gas station, the SUV was involved in another crash a few blocks away. While allegedly speeding the man's vehicle hit a Honda Accord with extreme force, splitting it in half. The driver of the Accord suffered serious injuries. After hitting it, the SUV continued northbound for two more blocks, hopped a curb, went through a parking lot, then pummeled into the North Seattle gas station. Firefighters arrived at the scene and extinguished the flames, taking the man and woman to the hospital.

Presently, no arrests have been made. Uber is cooperating with police and have removed the man from their service. “Our hearts and thoughts go out to all those involved in this terrible accident, and the driver has been removed from the app,” Uber spokeswoman Tracy Breeden told KOMO-TV. "We will work with the Seattle Police Department to assist in their investigation.” As of Wednesday afternoon, toxicology information regarding the driver in the crash has not been released. The unbelievable video of the crash is making rounds on the internet, depicting a crash so intense that it stands to go viral.

Regardless of the circumstances, everyone deserves skilled legal representation if they receive criminal charges. A charge is not a conviction, and every DUI arrest is susceptible to police procedural error. Breathalyzers are not infallible instruments. If you have been charged with drunk driving in the Seattle area, you must seek out expert legal counsel to protect your rights and fight your charges.
